Layering Basics - How to Layer your Products
Layering your skincare products in the correct order is essential to maximize their effectiveness and to ensure that they penetrate the skin properly. This blog will be walking you through some of the basics of how to layer your products and how to get the most out of your skincare routine!
The first step should always be to cleanse your skin. Starting with a gentle cleanser will allow you to remove all the dirt, oil and makeup from your skin, prepping for the products to follow. Also be sure to choose a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type as it will maximize its effectiveness. The second step is to tone your skin. Use a toner to balance the pH of your skin and prepare it for the subsequent products. Toners can also provide additional benefits like hydration and exfoliation which is important to help replenish the skin after cleansing. The next step is to incorporate any specific skincare treatments that are specialized to your routine, Apply any targeted treatments such as serums, essences or ampoules. These products contain active ingredients that address specific skin concerns like aging, acne or hyperpigmentation. Apply them in order of thinnest to thickest when it comes to their consistency to ensure that they can all be effectively absorbed. The fourth step is to apply your eye cream. If you do use an eye cream, apply it gently around the orbital bone using your ring fingers. This step can help hydrate and address concerns like dark circles or puffiness if these are conditions that you are prone to! Next, we recommend that you moisturize. Apply a moisturizer to hydrate and seal in moisture. Choose a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type, whether it's lightweight lotion, cream or gel. Lastly, make sure you are applying your sunscreen! In the daytime especially, always finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays and helps prevent premature aging and sun damage.
Tips for Layering
- Allow each of the products that you are applying to fully absorb before applying the next one. This will ensure optimal penetration and prevent pilling, caused from your products not being fully worked into the skin surface.
- Use gentle patting or pressing motions when applying products to avoid tugging or pulling on the skin surface.
- If you’re using multiple treatments, wait a few additional minutes between each layer to again allow them to sink into the skin effectively.
- Consider the consistency of the products when you are layering your skincare. Apply lighter, more watery products before thicker, creamier ones for best results.
Remember, everyone’s skin is unique, and you may need to adjust the layering order or products based on the specific needs of your skin. It’s also important to patch test new products and introduce them gradually to avoid potential skin reactions or irritations. However, for the majority, this will be the most effective way to layer your skincare products in order to get the most out of your routines!
